STATION 25 OF THE RCMSAR PACIFIC REGION
Our 30 plus unit members are all volunteers - men and women - based on Salt Spring Island. We are trained and equipped to respond to marine emergencies both as first on scene and also as part of a multi-asset response. The marine environment can be hazardous, and the Gulf Islands is an extremely active area for boaters, many of whom are Salt Spring Island residents. Our vessel is therefore kept well-equipped and in good repair. Volunteers are provided with the use of personal gear and equipment to ensure the highest levels of quality and safety.
We regularly participate in co-training with land based Salt Spring Island Search and Rescue, neighbouring RCMSAR Units and the Canadian Coast Guard station based in Ganges Harbour.
We deliver Marine Safety Awareness Programs in elementary schools, run an annual Junior Crew Program in the high school, maintain Kids Don’t Float PFDs at local marinas and docks, and conduct Courtesy Safety Checks on request for boaters in local marinas and sailing clubs. RCMSAR PACIFIC REGION
Station 25 is part of the RCMSAR Pacific Region whose mission is to provide a permanent 24/7 search and rescue capability for marine requirements in Canada and prevent the loss of life and injury.
We are one of 29 marine rescue stations within the RCMSAR Pacific Region with volunteers on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, ready to respond to marine emergencies and assist the 18 Canadian Coast Guard stations in covering the 25,725 kilometers of BC coastline. In 2017 the RCMSAR Pacific Region’s 1,104 volunteers contributed over 78,000 volunteer hours, engaged in 2,752 training exercises and 576 rescue missions, assisting 538 mariners in distress, and saved 136 people and property value estimated a more than $22 million.
