RCMSAR 25 offers a Junior Crew Program each year in co-operation with Gulf Islands Secondary School. Up to 8 senior high school students each year can apply to the program through GISS’s Work Experience course.

Our Juniors program includes both classroom and on-the-water training. In the fall, classroom sessions based on the RCMSAR Search and Rescue Crew Manual covers all aspects of marine SAR activities, including safety, practical seamanship, communications, navigation, and search and rescue techniques. As part of the program, the students will optain the following nationally recognized certifications:

Pleasure Craft Operator Card (Transport Canada)

Marine Basic First Aid, Canadian Red Cross

Restricted Operator Certificate - Maritime (Marine VHF radio operator’s certification)

Starting in January, the training moves to RCMSAR25’s 30 ft fast-response rescue vessel, the Amarah Gabriel. Students will learn boat handling, navigation, and search-and-rescue techniques in a series of on-the-water training sessions over the winter and spring.

The training our Juniors receive is the same as that received by our regular members, in a program tailored to the needs, learning styles, and schedules of high-school students. The instructors in our Juniors Program are experienced, active volunteer members of RCMSAR25.
